Greetings Fall 2020

Hello Fall 2020 Yoga East Meets West,

This may be a challenging semester...but we are all in this online experiment together. Each week we will meet virtually to discuss readings and practice, and have an experience working with guest teachers, some of whom we might not have been able to get to campus.

In order to work our practice sessions, you will need PROPS (we will be looking at some orthodoxies that mandate them, but they may be useful to you in any event). If you would like to borrow props, which must be cleaned and returned, please contact me laurie.greene@stockton.edu. I will let you know where you can pick them up. YOU WILL NOT BE GIVEN A FINAL GRADE UNTIL THEY ARE RETURNED. :)

PROPS:
1 yoga mat (if you like one)
2 blocks
1 blanket (firm)
1 bolster
1 yoga strap (with buckle)

Your attendance at remote classes on ZOOM is mandatory. This is especially true when we have practice sessions. You also must have your camera on and be available for discussion during class. This is a GIS Seminar which requires that you read and be available to discuss the material. I know how easy it is to escape remotely, but please give yourself a fighting chance at getting the most out of your tuition!

I have tried to use more online resources this term to make your texts more accessible. Please GET THE TEXTS which are required. Many are available in inexpensive digital formats or used.

I am available always by email: Laurie.Greene@stockton.edu
                                       or text: 609.214.6596

Please make me aware of any problems you are having ASAP (know that I want to help resolve these problems, and that there is usually a relatively painless solution if we all have good intentions).

  • Do not neglect to hand in assignments and tell me after the fact about a problem
  • I will not chase after you for missing work (I may remind you the first time only)
  • You are responsible for checking the syllabus and notes which are on this class blog
  • You are responsible for any changes to due dates or information you miss if you miss class
  • The syllabus may change if the class needs dictate this, please understand that I RARELY do this (I like to allow you to plan) but I also want to be able to adjust to this online format if needed.
We are off on our exploration of Yoga: One of the phenomena of modern popular culture and ancient culture!

What to make of this? That's what this semester is all about. It will be challenging. Some of the topics and readings are, but it will also require you to reflect on many aspects of your own thinking and worldview, and you will be asked to sample some aspects of physical practice (which may be challenging) so that we can have first hand experiences for our analysis.
